Akha Life University
Guideline
Akha Life University as we intend is not teaching notions based only on books.
Words alone and even academic teachers cannot explain fully the traditional way
of Akha. They call themselves the “first humans of the central land” and moved
from China during the centuries, settling in different countries, Myanmar,
Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and many others. Everywhere they improved the
surrounding environment, preserving original trees and water resources
according to their traditional ways of life. Akhas brought with them the base
of mutual respect among different families and tribes, all sharing mother earth
fruits and the same ancient spiritual devotion for nature and ancestral
spirits.
Concept idea of the ALU project
The intent of Akha Life university (ALU) is to create
awareness about the importance of a centuries old knowledge based on effective
nature motherly care, traditionally against any abuse of soil, water and
resources. Since they exists the Akhas dedicate to environment the same respect
they devote to their ancestors, an uninterrupted lineage of teachings and
methods still available in the community were the traditional way - or Akha zan
- is preserved. The younger Akha generations are not always aware of the
importance to trace their roots, often because they are mostly adapted to the
changing technological world. One of the main goals of ALU is to raise
awareness on why it is so important to preserve a knowledge that is part of the
world commune cultural heritage. One of the main goals of ALU is to raise
awareness on why it is so important to preserve a knowledge that is part of the
world commune cultural heritage. The Akha Life University will be the cultural
reference center for Akha people to share with other traditions and individuals
their way to live in harmony with nature and other ethnicities. Akhas are
indeed historically peaceful minded people and mostly thanks to their attitude
this culture is still alive to our times.
Akha society has a hierarchy based on the respect for elders and village leaders who proved their selfness and positive attitude towards their communities, showing mutual respect and human solidarity among different families and clans. This is the reason of the ALU choice to make Akha culture a master matter to study and research, as also a way to avoid consequently its decline. Preserving traditions alive it means to avoid that Akha historical and traditional heritage may become only a topic for academic papers and museum exhibitions, as happened to many other ancient and already disappeared civilizations.
The spirit of Akha people
Akhas
are valuing their elders as part of a precious human uninterrupted spiritual
chain from their spiritual ancestors to the modern times. One of the ALU
program courses is on family lineage tree, in order to understand the origin of
names and the respective traditional characteristic of every clan, as well the
region where they come from and the skills their tribe transmitted from
generation to generation. As example a family of traditional herbal healers,
one of shaman priests, or iron tools makers, bamboo farmers, wood artisan and
so on.
The teachers are selected by their experience and knowledge of the pure traditional heritage of his or her parents, grandparents and ancestors. Every single course explores different fields of activities, sowing a seed for present and future generation in the respect of ambient, humans and animals.
